Sophie

Sophie Cuckoo has always been the one with a conscience in addition to her Cuckoo-typical ego . she and her sisters are all different shades of morally grey , typically only participating in things for themselves and occasionally mutant kind ( if it benefits them ) , but Sophie’s heroic streak often puts her at odds with the others , especially now that she’s joined NYX .often known as the most powerful of the Five-In-One and leader of the hive , this put a target on her back . she was killed by Esme not once , but twice , out of jealousy . the two have since reconciled after their battle against Carrion Crow , but they still butt heads often .Sophie’s not perfect and she knows that . she’s played her part in her sisters’ schemes , but she’s inching away from their morally greyness and just a little further into the light . torn between her new friends and her sisters , Sophie snapped and severed herself from the hive completely , cutting their bond . it nearly broke her , and her telepathy remains fractured .as much as she fights with them , as much as she resents their darkness , they’re still her sisters and she loves them . she’s piecing back together her powers , and their bond , one shard at a time .——————————————————————————✦ Sophie attends college and is the only one of her sisters to do so
✦ she is not currently linked to the hive , and has joined NYX with Kamala Khan , but she is still often seen with her sisters

✦ Sophie decided that the Cuckoos would celebrate their birthday on April 12th , the same as her favorite actor , Tyler Kirch , from her favorite tv show , “ Small Town ” .
✦ Sophie struggled the most when she and Esme were resurrected , having the most difficulty adjusting to a world that had changed so much while she slept

Phoebe

Phoebe Cuckoo has a fiery personality . she’s hot-tempered , impulsive , and fiercely loyal to her sisters .her family , namely the hive , are everything to her . theres nothing she wouldn’t do for them . she tried once to stand apart , followed Mindee into individuality with red hair dye , and even tried to find love , but to want something for herself is to drift too far from the others and she will never choose herself over them .——————————————————————————✦ Phoebe wants things of her own , but not at the cost of her sisters . the hive will always be her first priority , and anything that risks pulling her away from them has to go . she sacrifices and denies herself a lot , like romantic relationships and her red hair , which she loved
✦ with Sophie now seeking individuality with her new friends ( see Sophie’s file for more details) , Phoebe does feel a little bitterness towards her sister . Sophie was amongst their sisters when they convinced her that her relationship with Quentin Quire was pulling her away from them . now , Sophie’s the one that’s pulled away , and Phoebe doesn’t know how to handle that
✦ Phoebe deeply regrets how drawn to the Phoenix she was , as it ultimately led to the deaths of the thousand-in-one . this was under her leadership of the hive , a fact she’s very ashamed of , and afterwards allowed Celeste to take over
✦ Phoebe has the most aggressive personality . while Esme’s anger and manipulation is more subtle and conniving , Phoebe is a wildfire

Irma ( Mindee )

Irma ( Mindee ) Cuckoo is the most gentle , the most soft-spoken , and so often overlooked , even by her sisters . while the others clashed over control of the hive , Irma was content with just being one of them .however , her silence isn’t weakness , and her kindness doesn’t mean she’s soft . she was the second Cuckoo to dramatically change her appearance , not in the spiteful way that Esme had before her , but to figure out who she was as an individual . she dyed her hair black and cut away the sameness that had always defined the hive .this small act of rebellion inspired Phoebe to do the same , and challenged Celeste’s fear of change . unfortunately , this didn’t last .since becoming five again , the Cuckoos have reverted back to conformity , but Irma has managed to hold onto her kind heart . she may not be the most powerful of the hive , but Irma’s strength lies in her gentleness under pressure and her refusal to be anything but herself .——————————————————————————✦ Irma is the only Cuckoo who’s never tried to lead the hive
✦ she still answers to Irma , but only with the ones she’s closest to . Everyone else strictly calls her Mindee
✦ she plays piano , though she dislikes playing in front of others
✦ Irma often misses her short , black hairdo , and keeps a box of dye just in case
✦ Sophie was always her favorite sister , and her departure from the hive hit Irma the hardest
✦ she has frequent nightmares about Dr. Sublime’s lab . she’s the only one with any memories , however fragmented , from before their conditioning

Celeste

Celeste Cuckoo is witty , acidic , and always dressed to destroy . she was once the quietest of the five-in-one , but she took the lead in the three-in-one . she’s more like Emma Frost than any of her sisters are , and certainly more than she’d ever care to admit .fashionable , clever , and cruel when she wants to be , Celeste is a real life Regina George . but on the inside , there’s still a hint of the fragile girl she’d been before . she never wanted to lead . but , after Sophie and Esme passed , someone had to .after she took control of the Phoenix , and after she took control of the hive from Phoebe , Celeste held the three of them together with diamond-hard will . they’d already lost two , and she refused to let them splinter any further .——————————————————————————✦ Celeste is the most like Emma Frost , not only in appearance , but in personality
✦ she has the biggest interest in fashion and is Emma’s right hand when it comes to planning the Hellfire Gala
✦ Celeste is the most codependent , needing to be identical with her sisters . she’s terrified of change and individuality , because without the others and their link , she doesn’t know who she is . she’s the most deeply entrenched in the hive , the most deeply connected . even her sisters changing their appearance , like their hair , deeply upset Celeste
✦ her confidence has grown tremendously over the years , and her ego . she often believes she’s better than the others . however , without them , Celeste is as timid as she used to be . this is why you’ll rarely see Celeste without at least one of her sisters

Esme

Esme Cuckoo is cunning , calculating , and catastrophically emotional . she’s not afraid to stray from the hive . she wants to be seen , to be in control , to be recognized , and feared .she’s ruled as much by heart as by hunger , torn between the need to be adored , and the drive to dominate . she falls hard and fast , mistaking power and obsession for love . this has been her most fatal flaw . to Esme , love and romance are both weapons and weaknesses , craving devotion as fiercely as she craves power .manipulation and betrayal both come naturally to Esme , the dark streak amongst her sisters , always clawing for control and recognition no matter the cost , even Sophie’s life . this ended up being her own downfall , though , as her betrayal against Xorn led to her own death .since her resurrection , Esme’s fallen a little more in line , fully reintegrated into the hive . whether this is because her sisters keep a more watchful eye on her , genuine growth , or simply Esme biding her time , it’s impossible to know for sure .Esme doesn’t want to blend in , and she definitely doesn’t care for being a hero . she wants to scrawl her name across the world .——————————————————————————✦ Esme is the most power hungry . she’s always resented that Sophie is known as the strongest Cuckoo , and has a very unstable relationship with her sister . she’s murdered her twice , for power , for control , and just out of spite . she loves Sophie too , though , when she’s able to put power aside . they’ve since reconciled in their battle against Carrion Crow , when Esme refused to kill Sophie again , sacrificing herself instead
✦ Esme falls in love hard and fast . this is one of her biggest faults . she’ll do anything for power , and anything for love , extremely manipulative but also very easily manipulated
✦ she has a past of substance abuse . while she no longer uses kick , she does smoke cigarettes
✦ of her sisters , Esme is the only one with tattoos . she has two crows behind her left shoulder , representative of her and Sophie’s reconciliation . she also has five diamonds across her right collar bone , and a queen bee on her right ankle . behind her right shoulder are claw marks , part of a matching set she has with her partner , Laura Kinney

✦ she didn’t expect her sisters to ever resurrect her again . after her attempt to possess Gabby , her second murder of Sophie , and her defeat , Sophie promised , “ i’m going to send you far away this time , sister . so you can never come back ” . for so long , her consciousness was buried deep , distant and isolated . when Esme was brought back on Krakoa and seemingly given yet another chance , this time , she took it . she never apologized , Esme never apologizes for anything , but her gratitude is evident in the way she has not betrayed her sisters since

✦ all the Cuckoos were taught how to horseback ride on Krakoa . Esme has her own horse , a white thoroughbred mare named Diamond

The Hive

——————————————————————————✦ “ the hive ” refers to the Cuckoo’s ability to combine their powers and create one super mind . this is often why they speak at the same time and finish one another’s sentences
✦ the hive is also an inner world within the Cuckoo’s minds , a manifestation of the place where their psyches connect , like a dreamscape . it is surrounded by a mirror maze to shield it from other telepaths , seemingly made of diamond , all creating a kaleidoscope of reflections that would be dizzying to anyone else . the maze is ever changing so that the Cuckoos are the only ones who can navigate it . at the center of the maze is “ the hive ” , faceted by five doors , one for each Cuckoo .
✦ the center of the hive appears sort of like an old fashioned movie star’s dressing room , with five vanities . it’s filled with books and magazines , all containing one another’s memories , thoughts , dreams , etc .

✦ with all five Cuckoos alive again , they’ve chosen to no longer have a “ leader ” . instead , they rotate which of them wears black while the others wear white ( or vice versa ) , and put things to a vote . the one wearing the opposite color is the one that makes the final decision in case of a tie
✦ also , with all five alive again , they’ve decided not to pursue individuality , claiming : “ we're just one . singular . we've tasted this idea of individuality and didn't care for it ” . of course , this isn’t entirely true , there’s still discourse and differing opinions amongst them . Sophie still wants to be a hero , Esme still craves power and adoration , Celeste still believes she’s better than the rest , and Phoebe still craves things of her own . they’ll deny it , though .
